Ahmedabad. Solving a murder case is not easy. Sometimes it takes a long time to nab the accused. But it took the police not one or two years but 49 years to catch the accused in a murder case in Gujarat. You might not believe it, but it is true. 49 years after allegedly killing his landlord in Ahmedabad, a 73-year-old man has been arrested by the Ahmedabad Police. He was arrested from his village in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.

English newspaper Indian Express quoted the police as saying that Sitaram Bhatane is accused of killing 70-year-old Mani Shukla in 1973 at his home in Saijpur, Ahmedabad. The police had registered an FIR on September 14, 1973 at Sardarnagar police station as a complainant. After this investigation, it was found that three tenants lived on the floor above the floor on which the landlady lived, who were brothers – Sitaram, Mahadev and Narayan.

Death came to know after 3 three
According to the police, the house remained locked for three days and the police were called after receiving information about foul smell from the neighborhood. Investigation revealed that three days before the woman’s death was discovered, Sitaram was seen entering Shukla’s house at night, after which the house was locked from outside. It was also learned that he had stolen utensils from the house. According to PV Gohil, the investigating officer of Sardarnagar police station, Sitaram, with the help of his brothers, was used to committing such thefts and a warrant was issued for his arrest when he was on the run. Gohil said that both the brothers have died.

This is how the arrest happened
Gohil said, “Sitaram used to roam around his village singing bhajans.” Sitaram said that he went to Shukla’s house when she was sleeping because he needed money. When he was stealing things, she woke up and tried to stop him. There was a fight when the woman fell down and Sitaram left her and ran away. Mahadev and Narayan told the investigators that Sitaram had no job, so he used to steal utensils, clothes etc. His relatives in Ahmednagar also told the police that he had committed similar crimes in his village.
